Hopi Name from 1935 field notes: Melloni (Spanish) Hopi melloni (Old type)
Source of Seed: Old type (Spanish introduction, Edmund) Pure strain
Crop Management: Grown down below, sand dunes, planted in later May or early June. Planted just before last frost. Then they come up after the frost. Requires special care and projection. Seeds selected when eaten.
Harvesting and Storage: Cut from vine and brought in. Laid out on floor until eaten. Remove rind and seeds, placed in sun, cut in spiral and dried. Seeds, ground to remove kernels from hulls, soaked and hulls removed from top of water.
